Hybrid cars are currently heralded as the wave of the future. With improved fuel economy and more environmentally friendly emissions, we may all be driving a hybrid someday soon. The government has even given them the thumbs up with a $1300 tax credit for taxpayers who purchase a new hybrid car. Saturn’s Green Line of hybrid cars is very popular among energy conscious consumers. It’s latest addition is the Aura Green Line.
Priced under $23,000, the Aura Green Line is one of the most inexpensive hybrid options on the market today. This mid sized sedan comes with a 5 star safety rating, standard OnStar, a multiple airbag system and Stabili-Trak for a smooth ride.
The gas mileage of the Aura Green Line is rated for 28 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. It uses an integrated nickel metal hydride battery pack and a belt alternator starter system ( BAS) that shuts off the car’s engine while stopped in traffic to minimize idling. The engine restarts on demand when the driver presses the accelerator.
The Aura Green Line reportedly has 30% better fuel economy over a standard engine. It comes with GM’s standard 5 year/ 100,000 powertrain limited warranty and looks nearly identical to the standard Aura, except for a few small labels announcing it as a member of the elite Green Line.
Test drivers reported that it accelerates nicely, handles well, is responsive to the road and offers a smooth ride for the driver and passengers. The layout of the instrument panel is well designed and rear passengers have plenty of room, enough room even for three adults to be seated comfortably in the back seat.
A few drawbacks with the Aura Green Line are the noticeable road noise and the lack of head room in the rear of the cab when the sun roof option is included.
With stiff competition from other hybrids like the Nissan Altima, Toyota Prius, the Honda Insight and the Chevy Malibu, the Aura Green Line’s low price and comfortable feature set may push it to the head of the class.
